A Day in the awesome life of Afrika Burn, by Fizzy Dwink
Waking up in our shanty town of a campsite, we exit the boiling hot tent, where Nic Dacomb is shading under a brightly coloured sarong enjoying his daily bowl of 'Pro-Nutro' -a South African chocolate flavoured instant porridge and he introducing our neighbours to his blue monster puppet friend Dazzle! We snack on fresh figs that were gifted by a sweet 12 year old girl wearing a costume mask, walking through camps with her treats in a box around her neck.

The 'Peaches and Cream' Pamper Palace get ready to set out in the dusty desert on this hot, still, dry morning to share the gift of massage, 'Orgasmatron' (copper head massaging implement) face paint and 'positive compliment' strips with fellow burners.

fashion, lounging on inflatables at the TI KI LA theme camp were the
first stop to be pampered , they had tequila to share and each afternoon they hosted a 'sundowner' party (drinks at sunset) ! Next stop for a pamper was the tin shed 'Stasie Kafe' (Afrikaans for 'Station Cafe')
who gave the gift of freshly brewed espresso in enamel mugs to hundreds
of caffeine addicts each morning. After enjoying a baby cino, the sound of Bill Withers
'lovely day' lured us over to a mutant vehicle (a vehicle turned into a roving, interactive piece of art) in the shape of
a top hat, 'Judy' was giving out vegan ice cream and 'toast' in which you had 'toast' your mate - then the guy running the show chose the spread according to the kind of toast you made; we got nutella (we were apparently sweet) and peanut butter (our toast had a lot of sustenance) .. We found ourselves stationed here for least 2 hours, painting the faces of people on the dance floor - until we needed to have a sit down in the shade...
'Desert Magic' a theme camp offering flavoured herbal tea, home made biscuits a relaxing carpeted space filled with bean bags and a daily magic show became our favourite place to chill. After a brief visit to the CHARD BAR , 'high T' for foam party in the back of a truck and a ride in the back of the mutant vehicle 'the ginger bread house' around the sculptures in the playa we set to help our friend Lucio for his burn. Donning the high vis safety RANGER DANGER vests, our job was to keep the crowds out of the perimeter while Lucio set fire to the 4 meter tall wooden 'boot' he had spent 3 months building. It was noted as a definite highlight in the daily dairy writing session back at shanty town where we swapped our pamper hair wrap costumes for 80's Lycra and set off again to dance the night away at various dance floors including mutant vehicles ; an open air double Decker bus fitted with L.E.D lights, a rhino blowing fire out of his horn and a disco truck that we could ride on around the playa plus many epic themed camps!

It is the spectacular result of the creative expression of participants who gather once a year in the Tankwa Karoo to create a temporary city of art, theme camps, costume, music and performance!
